We weren't disappointed. We stayed in cabin 8, a huge cabin with three bedrooms, a full kitchen, two decks, its own dock and a fishing boat. The swimming beach featured tons of comfy lounge chairs, two swim rafts, a dock and a little slide. The weather was hot and it took a couple box fans to try to cool the cabin down, but otherwise everything was perfect.
We spent hours on the lake, fishing, boating, floating, swimming, splashing and just taking it all in. The lake was quiet, serene and so relaxing. Loons called to us each afternoon and Natalie practiced calling back. We took quiet boat rides searching for other wildlife and fished from the dock for fun.
And swam!
We cooked up delicious meals in the kitchen and on the grill, sharing them around a huge dining table or the patio table out back. We sipped wine in the evenings, read to the kids before nap times and I even went for morning runs in Park Rapids.
We took a few mini-trips during the week. One to Itasca State Park to see the headwaters and drive through the beautiful surroundings.
We stopped at Summerhill Farm for lunch, one of my favorite little places to visit when I was young. It was just as delicious as I remembered.
We ate dinner at the fancy 502 in Walker. Amazing.
Gavin also blew us away with his ability to kneeboard. We brought Jason's old full-size kneeboard thinking we'd just try it out with him, and he figured out how to get up during just a few tries. By the second afternoon we were out he was making circles around our section of the lake. Leaving us speechless. Go, Gavin!
Natalie and I took the tube out for a spin. Somehow, Jason managed to create a huge wave (with a fishing boat, mind you) which sent us flying and then plunging into the water. What a ride!
And like every year, we made an offering to the lake. This year, it was one of Gavin's swim shoes and my sunglasses. Previous contributions have included a digital camera and, ahem, an anchor. (Seriously, who doesn't leave them tied to the boat anyway?)
The week was so fun that before we left we booked next year's adventure in cabin 7. Thank you, Dwain and Benita. We can't wait.
