My First (Treadmill) 5K

Today I did something I never thought possible - I ran my first 5K (3.1 miles)! I can't even explain how excited I am, not to mention how gross and sweaty. Ha!

I started training (again) back in March, hoping to run a 5K this spring or summer. I quickly signed up for the Fargo Marathon 5K, which is this coming Friday. Eek!

Then, I learned of the May 12 HER (Hyperemesis Education and Research) Foundation 5K, to be held in Washington, D.C. I first heard about this organization while pregnant with Gavin, thanks to a news clip my parents saw one evening. Since it's near to my heart (I had hyperemesis with both of my kids) I've been a volunteer with the organization ever since, helping a few moms as they struggle with the condition.

I so badly wanted to be a part of this first 5K, which would feature runners from across the country and donate all of the earnings to hyperemesis research at UCLA.

After a little research, I learned they were registering virtual runners. I could do this! I just needed to sign up and run a 5K where ever I was and turn in my time. Perfect!

So, I hit the gym this morning, knowing that after 9 weeks of training with the Couch to 5K program, I had yet to actually make it 3.1 miles without walking. But I knew I could do this.

And I did! I completed the race in 36:20.

It felt so good to send my time to officials and it will feel even better to mail off an envelope of checks from family to the HER Foundation later this week. Though the 5K didn't officially include pledges, I asked close family to consider making a donation for this event - and they did!

I'm so thrilled to have been a part of this and to have pushed myself to do something I never thought possible.

And now it's time for a shower.
