This past weekend was the annual German festival, Bavarian Blast (catchy name, I know.) They brought in polka bands from around the country and Europe, served up some tasty food, and you know the beer was flowing.
It all sounds a little corny, but we knew we'd have fun. And as it turns out, it was the perfect little vacation for us. Both Jason and I are proud of our German heritage and it's important to us to share the culture and language with our children. I've studied German since I was eight, eventually earning a major in college. Jason grew up immersed in his mom's German-Russian heritage and likely knew how to polka before he could walk. We've both traveled to Germany and plan to return - someday.
The kids were great sports this weekend - dancing to polka music, gobbling up Spaetzle, Kartoffelsalat, Schnitzel, Rotkohl and more. We stayed at a bed and breakfast (maybe not the best idea with kids), toured the Schell brewery and even had time the next day to see good friends.
Here's a few of my favorite photos:
Lots of time in the van this weekend.
Lunch - Landjaeger (pork/beef sausage), Sauerkraut and Kartoffelsalat (warm potato salad.)
Touring the Schell brewery grounds, established 150 years ago.
The Schells used this same spring as the original water source for their beer.
Sampling, of course. (The kids had Schell's root beer.)
Dinner at the Kaiserhoff featured Schnitzel (breaded pork),
Rotkohl (delicious red cabbage) and Spaetzle (noodles).
No kids' menu tonight - it was German food off our plates.
We stayed at a beautiful bed and breakfast. And the hot tub made a great kids' pool!
Catching some evening polka music at the fairgrounds.
