Look at me, Mom!

My new favorite thing now is watching Natalie dance in the car. It started last week when we finally made the big move Wednesday and turned her car seat around forward facing. We were going to do it at a year, but she never complained in the car and I’d read it’s best to wait as long as possible, since they’re safer when rear-facing. When Jason plunked her in her car seat Wednesday morning with her new outdoor tennis shoes on, her poor little legs were all folded up like Ghandi and we knew it was time to turn her around.

So now that she’s facing forward and I’ve bought a funky little fold down mirror, I can see what the little pumpkin has been up to these last few months. Turns out, little Natalie cuts quite the rug, despite the efforts of her five-point harness to hold her in place. Thursday she had me in tears with one of her dances. I had just picked her up from daycare, buckled her in and turned on a new CD with spunky little songs. When I glanced into the mirror to check on her before pulling out into the street, I noticed her little head shifting side-to-side in perfect time to the music. No other part of her body was moving, just her little head, back and forth, back and forth. She didn’t smile, didn’t say a word, just back and forth. When the music would slow in tempo she’d stop, only to pick up her little dance as soon as the music sped up again. I laughed and cheered her on, clapping and crying. She cracked a tiny smile once for half a second, straightened her lips again and went back to dancing. “It’s all in the attitude, mom,” I could hear her saying.

Now whenever I play track four on the CD, it’s a guaranteed mood-lifter by looking in the rear-view mirror.
