Making Personal Matters Public

Poor Natalie will probably never forgive me for all the times I write and talk about her more personal matters, such as those in the diaper department. Ahh, but alas, we haven't even started potty training yet. Think of the stories to come!

This week she's really gotten to be a smarty pants about her, well, pants. Thanks to her being able to sign diaper, which she's been doing for months, she's starting to tell us more regularly when she's pooped or peed, or even when she's in the process of doing so. Just this morning as I was getting her all cleaned up for the day, I put on a fresh diaper and started buttoning her little onesie. Her face stiffened up and she stopped smiling for a few seconds and then immediately signed diaper. Sure enough, she had just peed! What a good girl! We clapped and whooped it up a bit! I think with a lot of encouragement to continue recognizing what she's doing and then telling us, we'll hopefully pave the way to better potty training once we're at that stage.

A couple of nights ago I brought Natalie up from the bath to let her run buck-naked around the living room for 10-20 minutes to air out her little diaper-rashed cheeks. Thankfully she's never had too much trouble with rashes, but even a little pink or red can't be comfortable. We do what we can to make it heal quickly. As I ran to her bedroom to grab pajamas and a diaper for later, she started fussing. I returned to the living room to see her softly crying and signing "diaper." Poor thing! I explained that she needed to go diaper-free for a bit, but I had one for later. Thanks to some fun books she was quickly distracted -- that is until she found the tube of diaper creme and started trying to put that on herself too! How do they know all these things, at such a young age? Maybe it wouldn't hurt to get out the little potty chair and see what happens in the coming weeks. How early is too early?

Wahoo! There is no such thing as too early to get out the potty seat. If she's signing, she's getting it. You're such a great mom!

Thanks, Rebecca! Actually, I did get out the potty chair last night, just to let her check it out and practice sitting on it while still diapered. She started playing with the lid, bonked herself on the head with it, burst into tears and wanted nothing to do with the chair. Alas, back into the box for now. :)
