Hats off to a Great Weekend

Man, we had about the best weekend we’ve had in weeks. Nothing too exciting happened, but I’m thinking that’s why it was so rejuvenating. Natalie kicked off the weekend by really, truly learning to walk Friday at daycare. She took her first steps months ago and has been fine tuning the art of creeping along furniture and taking five or six steps in the middle of a room since, but hasn’t just stood up and taken off – until now. I picked her up at the toddler room, where she was visiting the big kids and her teacher opened the door a crack to tell me Natalie learned something new. I squatted down her her level and sure enough she walked all five feet to me, paused briefly, veered around me and took off for the gym in a little Frankenstein sort of walk, legs stiff, arms up. She walked around the gym, stooping to pick up balls and throw them, walked out of the gym and headed down the hall to her room. She looked like she’d been walking for months, this grown up little toddler busy as can be and oh, so very proud of herself. My eyes brimmed with tears thinking about how much our baby has changed and how very happy I am for her every accomplishment.

The weekend continued to go up from there. Jason stayed home studying Friday night so I could enjoy pie with another mom friend and Natalie was kind enough to sleep in until 7:45 Saturday morning. We took in the Parent’s Fair for an hour, plunked her in the crib for a two-hour nap (it’s seriously been weeks since she’s taken one that long) and then she spent the early afternoon with Daddy so I could take in a baby shower for an expecting friend. It was so nice to enjoy the company of other moms, great food and silly shower games. I came back home even more refreshed!

Feeling brave and inspired, I filled up the big tub for Natalie’s bath instead of her little inflatable duck tub she’s become so attached to. We tried the transition a month ago, which we met with wild screaming. This time I piled in all 7 duckies, her fishing toys, three bath books, her stacking cups and a frog, filled the tub with bubbly, warm water and plunked her in without calling any attention to the change. She tensed up and looked around wildly, but I started quacking and splashing and she immediately softened and joined in. Success! But man, oh, man, did I miss that duck tub in about five minutes. She must have splashed out a gallon of water – up the walls, down the tub side, on the cabinets, and completely over me! But it’s worth it to see how much fun she has in the big girl tub!

Sunday continued to go well, despite the fact that Natalie woke up with my pink eye – which I also apparently caught from myself for a second time. How on earth does that happen?! We put in some drops, dressed her up and headed to church – something we haven’t been able to do for weeks thanks to one illness, event or another. And she was an angel the entire time, sitting in my lap, eating three cups of Gerber fruit puffs and bopping along to the Worship Too band. I know we likely lucked out, but I’ll take it! A long morning nap, afternoon running errands, buying $4 sweaters at the mall and sharing a DQ treat made the day especially nice, including an outing to our favorite Qdoba with Nikki and Dan for tasty burritos – Natalie eating at least a third of mine plus a half-cup of peaches and some guacamole. She ate faster than I could dish out my beans, rice and shredded beef. Where she puts it I have no idea, but she was as happy as a clam stuffing her face and dancing to the music on the radio.
