January Blur

January is always a busy month for us, but this year was the most intense yet. With two birthdays, two weeks apart, nearly every weekend involved a birthday party. While I love parties and seeing my kids beaming for days on end, it also means plenty of preparations, baking, cleaning, decorating, thank you writing, invite sending, organizing and scheduling. Yikes.

This January we also realized we needed to pick a Kindergarten for Natalie. And here I'd previously thought I was over-reacting in December by talking about school and our options. In fact, I'd started forcing myself to keep the conversation off the table, certain we wouldn't need to make a decision until summer. Ah, naive parent. One look at the public school Web site sent me into a panic. School registration is in January!

So in the middle of birthdays, we threw ourselves into head-on research, chatting with a couple dozen other parents and taking an entire day to tour schools, meet with principals and sift through data and gut feelings. Thankfully, just a few days later our hearts and heads came to the same conclusion and we chose a wonderful school - in fact, the same one I attended as a child.

January also brought with it some extended work hours for Jason, insanely cold temperatures that kept us from ever playing outside, weekly meetings for Financial Peace University, two doctor appointments for the kids, two surgeries for close family members, portraits to mark Natalie's birthday, more involvement at church and a partridge in a pear tree.

As of now, I'm erasing a few things from our February schedule and replacing them with family movie nights, more time by the fire and (hopefully) maybe a chance to get outside and play. I'm ready for that sort of schedule.
