Prayerful

I took Gavin to his first memorial service today, as the Concordia College community came together to mourn the very sudden loss of its president, Pamela Jolicoeur. She was an amazing leader who served our college with faith, drive, clarity and courage. She was a very genuine person who frequently thanked all of us for all we do for the college and its students. Her impact was made visible by the overflowing hall where we held the service.

I struggled with whether or not I should attend. My heart was already with everyone on campus, but I wasn't sure if it would be appropriate to bring a young child. Yet, as the service time approached, I realized I couldn't stay away. I stuffed a bag with books and snacks, scooped up Gavin and headed to campus.

Hundreds of faculty, students and staff were already seated when we arrived. We found a quiet corner near the door (just in case we needed to step out) and I pulled Gavin close. Several people smiled at him and talked to him as they came in through the door. I had forgotten how much we're all drawn to young life in times of loss.

During the next half hour, as we sang, prayed, cried and remembered, Gavin sat perfectly still on my lap, needing none of the entertainment I'd brought along. Often, he leaned back and cuddled into my shoulder, somehow sensing how much mommy needed that right then.

I'm glad I went. I'm glad Gavin went too.

Glad you were able to go to that prayer service. Are you going to the funeral today?
