The other night I poured myself a delicious little drink – some wine, a little clear soda and I even dropped in a couple peach slices. Mmmm...just the relaxing treat I needed after a busy work day and rushed dinner hour. Natalie was still up, busy jumping around downstairs to dance music. Jason and I were determined to move a few pieces of big furniture around (to make room for a lovely new couch on it’s way) before we could settle down for the evening.
I set down my glass, told Natalie we’d be right back downstairs, and heaved an extremely heavy LazyBoy couch up the stairs with my husband. We hauled it into the living room, straightened up a few things and went back downstairs.
Natalie was still jumping all around and I was ready to dance with her. First, I reached for my wine glass.
It was empty.
Except for the peaches.
Empty.
“Who drank this?” I asked quickly.
“Not me,” says the angel.
“Natalie, you drank mommy’s wine!” I accused.
“Sorry, Mommy,” she says shyly.
The next hour and a half blurred together in a flurry of phone calls. My parents. Poison control. My parents again. Dial-a-Nurse at one hospital. Answering service at another hospital. Finally, Natalie’s Godmother who happens to be a nurse and a mom.
I strung together their suggestions - give her juice and a cookie to prevent a drop in blood sugar levels, keep her up for an extra hour and a half to observe, monitor her breathing. We even made her walk a straight line in the kitchen.
What a nightmare. I never, ever, ever imagined getting my preschooler drunk.
Thankfully, Natalie showed no symptoms other than at one point asking "Can I go to bed, mamma?"
Poison Control called back after an hour of my call, as they promised. I described how she was doing and they agreed that she seemed fine. Time for her to go to bed. Mommy too.
Thank goodness it all worked out in the end.
I think I'll stick to hot chocolate.

O.M.G. I know this must have been sooooo scary but you have to admit there is something a little funny about this, too!! One of those stories that you can tell her later on in life that she will LOVE. You are such a good mama, I don't think I would have thought to call poison control.
Amanda, your blog is adorable! I just saw it on my Facebook feed and figured I'd check it out. This was the funniest little story, I was just sitting at the desk laughing out loud all by myself in an empty dorm. Definitely a story you will have to share later on! :)
