Anyway, these are things that sure make life a lot easier in Our Wee Family and I hope that by sharing them they’ll do the same for you too. When it’s time to buy a new product, like a stroller, a toddler bed or even pajamas, I like to know what works and what’s worth the money. I love getting tips from other parents to start me off on my research and save me some time and effort. Chances are, you do too.
A couple months ago, I grew incredibly tired at the amount of pull-ups we were using. Natalie’s been day-trained for almost two years, but she’s still is wet at night. The kid sleeps 11 hours straight in practically a coma, so you can’t really blame her. With Gavin still in diapers and dabbling in pull-ups, I was ready to cut out what I could.
After looking online – cloth diaper sites, natural parenting sites, Mothering Magazine recommended sites – I was left empty-handed. Sure, some companies made “training pants,” but if you’ve ever actually trained a kid, you know they’re not really designed to hold much. Certainly not over night.
With a little more pressing, I found Cheeky Bum Diapers, an Etsy company run by a mom who makes fleece pull-ups for day and night. I ordered up a set of custom-made trainers and haven’t bought a pack of pull-ups since. I love that I’m saving money and being a tiny bit better on the environment. I also love that Natalie has a soft fleece material against her bottom each night, not a scratchy paper product.
To give you the whole story, I made a few mistakes when I first used them:
- I didn’t wash them first. I think a quick wash would have removed any residue and coating from manufacturing and made them more absorbable.
- I washed them with a natural soup – 7th Generation. I later learned you CANNOT use natural soap because it coats the fleece with an oil, usually coconut oil. I bought a small bottle of Tide for their use instead.
- I let Natalie try to go all night without a potty break. Now we potty her at about 10:30 p.m. when we go to bed.
Thanks, Cheeky Bum. I can’t imagine going back.

Hey, Amanda,
Are these cloth pull ups capable of holding A LOT of liquid? Eddie is almost always dry overnight, but when he's not, oh boy, he floods the bed even with a pull up on. I'd love to find something more absorbent and more comfortable than a disposable pull up.
Wow, Eddie! I'm not sure they could withstand that much. But, you could try e-mailing CheekyBum and see if she could make one for you and include an extra absorbent liner. That way you could test it out a few times and see how it held up. I bought a waterproof liner at Target (a 5x3 pad that I can place on top of Natalie's sheet) to use when I was first testing out the pull-ups. It saved me from middle of the night bed making. Let me know how it goes!
Great story Mandy, just thought it would be worth noting that you CAN use natural soaps with cloth diapers, as long as they are free of oils, dyes, and bleaches. There are some out there for people who want to stick with natural!
