Off the Charts

I'm happy to say Gavin's 18-month well check went lovely yesterday. His doctor was impressed by his vocabulary list, usage of Baby sign, running, attempts at dressing and undressing, interest in the potty and his athletic ability - the kid can scale a climbing dinosaur in the mall by himself in about 14 seconds and leave me gasping while he cheers for himself standing at the top. His physical and developmental stages are right on track and he's healthy as can be these days. (Remember those many months last winter when that was hardly the case?) In fact, we learned that because he somehow caught chicken pox despite his vaccination, he now doesn't need the booster before kindergarten. Way to go Gavin!

We also talked to her about his size, since he's one big boy. I'm earning the respect of his daycare teachers for my ability to haul him around on my hip still - well, that is when he isn't arching his back and throwing one of his lovely toddler fits. Then I pretty much just hold onto an ankle and pray I can make it to the car or wherever we're headed.

But she's not worried about that either. He's eating a wide variety of healthy foods, stops when he's full and gets lots of exercise. And he's tall, which helps too. He's in the 90th percentile for height and 96th for weight. And his head? Well, that's still off the charts. Way off the charts. With no sign of coming back anytime soon. Sadly, I must accept the genetic blame for that one. I apparently had a large mellon myself. It's the brains. What can I say?

I knew he was fine, but it sure feels good to have the doctor say all is well. He's a big, bright, beautiful boy. My sweet baby.
