Jason treated me to a swanky digital SLR for my second 29th birthday this week and I'm having a blast. I learned to shoot manually right out of college, during my two years at The Journal. One day during my first week, they simply handed me an old Nikon with NO automatic settings. I'd never even held one before! Thank goodness it at least had a light meter -- one of the cameras didn't! Bring back some portraits with your story, they said. And I did. They weren't pretty for about eight months, but then one day the whole process just sort of made sense and I could at least shoot some images that could be run on the front.
I've had a Cannon film SLR for about six years, but it's incredibly frustrating not knowing how you're shooting until you haul the film in for development. And I don't really think photography is like bike riding, at least not for me. I quickly forgot most of the process and tips I'd learned over those years and have been slowly reteaching myself since. I'm already loving the immediate feedback my new Nikon provides. And once spring hits and I can actually head outdoors for shooting, I'll really be able to test things out.
Here's a few shots of the pups with the new camera. Thanks, Jas!

nice work! which SLR did you get? i shoot with a Nikon D40.
and how is it possible that Sacci stayed still long enough to take a photo.
Same thing, Stacey, a D40. Course, you're a wee more skilled with your photography! I'm just winging it! :) Sort of like how I learned in the first place!
