Little Miss Independent

Last night as we sat down to eat supper – Natalie had been munching away for 20 minutes already, but who’s counting – I dug into my roast beef and potatoes right away. Natalie interrupted with a “na na,” her generic word she uses for anything she wants at the time, and held out her hand to me. I thought she was pointing, so I looked around and asked her what she wanted. She simply said “na na” again and reached her hand out to me. Not understanding, I took hold of her hand and she quickly smiled. Ahhh! She wanted to say prayers! My gosh, it completely surprised me that she’d caught on to our tradition that quickly. But sure enough, her smile grew larger when the three of us all held hands and said “Bless us o Lord” and she said her “Ahh” for amen at the end. This little girl is going to keep us on the right track!

Lately, little Natalie has become very determined to dress herself. She’s mastered taking off her shirt and can even put it on, mostly. Last night she wanted to put her PJs on herself. She let me guide the shirt on, but oh, she didn’t want an ounce of help with her little shorts. If I even helped pull them up in the back or helped move her toes so they wouldn’t catch on the hem, she’d take them completely off and start again. Finally, after about 20 minutes I couldn’t postpone bedtime anymore (she was sooooo tired) and I just put her shorts on for her. Poor thing cried and cried. But she settled down as soon as I tucked her into bed. More practice tomorrow, sweet Natalie.
