Welcome, Little Sprouts

With two weeks of rain and a snow scare out of the way, we finally planted Our Wee Garden. Using the Square Foot Gardening book, tips from a Baker's Nursery gardener who spoke at our college a couple months ago, and our grocery list of favorite vegetables, I made "the list." Then, I sketched out our 4x4 garden and marked out where each and every little plant would go. I used that drawing and list as my shopping guide later in the day.

After nap, we piled the kids in the van and headed to Levi Runions to scope things out. Since it's in a small town, we expected great service, but a smaller higher quality selection. Instead, we found at least a half-dozen green houses, an immense plant selection and a rather popular site for gardeners. The kids loved running the aisles, wandering after a farm cat, picking dandelions and taking a ride in the wagon for the plants. I loved slowly pacing the aisles of the vegetable green house and carefully picking out each item for our garden. A stop at the Old Fashioned General Store for Ice Cream sweetened the trip.

Still missing a few plants, we hit Menards for the rest, including some stylin' WonderPets and Dora gardening gloves. We hauled our supplies into the backyard and got started. Gavin and Natalie dug little holes where we pointed and we quickly filled up our plot with all kinds of adorable tiny plants. Jason plugged the worn spot under the fence where the rabbits sneak in and I planted a rhubarb near the pine tree too.

So, here's what's growing in Our Wee Garden:
  • Roma tomatoes
  • Broccoli
  • Buttercup Squash
  • Swiss Chard
  • Lettuce
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Basil
  • Sweet Something Onions
  • Walla Walla Onions
  • Strawberries
  • Green Beans
  • Peas
The strawberries are the first in. Mmmm.

 Everything is planted.

These are the extent of the tools needed.

Watering the plants ... and the Pomeranian.

What's going in your gardens this summer? Any plants you can't go without? Or ones that are too much of a hassle?

Looks terrific - great work! I'm excited to get our garden planted this month. I want to plant heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, and a rainbow of peppers. Should be lots of fun!
